Salzburger Nachrichten, daily newspaper established by the American 
occupation force; licence granted on June 7, 1945, published 
as an Austrian newspaper under American authority from 
October 23, 1945. Licensees and first publishers were M.  
Dasch and G. A.  Canaval. R.  Marcic was editor in chief from 
1959-1964 and K. H.  Ritschel from 1965-1995. The Salzburger 
Nachrichten, "Die  Presse" and  "Der Standard" are 
the leading quality daily newspapers in Austria. Circulation (1998): 
101,000.
