Sandl, Upper Austria, municipality in the district of Freistadt, 
alt. 927 m, pop. 1,558, 
area 58.36 km%%sup 2/%, at the foot of the Viehberg Mountain 
(alt. 1,112 m, skiing resort), the highest mountain in the 
eastern Muehlviertel Region, near the border with the Czech Republic; 
after 1800 centre of  Églomise Painting (influx of painters 
from Buchers in Bohemia). - Museum of eglomise painting (since 1989), 
customs post; marble quarry with stone industry, some summer tourism. 
- Baroque parish church (1739-1742), interior from around 1740-1760; 
Rosental Palace(1780-1790), with grand hall decorated in Josephinian 
classicist style. In the vicinity of Sandl, upper and lower Rosenhofer 
Ponds.
