b. Munich (Germany), Aug. 26, 1923, conductor. Chief music director in 
Aachen (from 1953), Wiesbaden (from 1958) and Cologne (1960-1963), 
1960-1970 head conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and 
1961-1972 also chief music director of the Hamburg Philharmonic. 
1970-1980 chief music director of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande 
and 1971-1993 chief music director of the Bavarian State Opera in 
Munich (1982-1993 also artistic director); since 1993 musical director 
of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Numerous recordings and guest 
performances.
