b. Skalsken near Litoměřice, Czech Republic (then 
Leitmeritz), Jan. 22, 1945. Archbishop of Vienna. Grew up in 
Vorarlberg after his family was expelled from the Sudetenland after 
1945; studies in Walberberg near Cologne (Germany), in Vienna and in 
Paris. Became a monk of the Dominican Order in Warburg (Germany) in 
1968; ordained as a priest in 1970, 1972-1975 spiritual adviser to 
university students in Graz, 1975-1991 at the Department of Theology 
of the University of Freiburg (Switzerland), 1987-1992 university 
professor of Dogmatics and Eastern Churches and titular bishop of 
Sutri; made an important contribution to the "Catechism of the 
Catholic Church", which was published in 1993 as secretary of its 
editorial committee; from 1991 auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese of 
Vienna in charge of science, the arts and culture and all matters in 
connection with the compilation of the World Catechism. Since1995 
Archbishop of Vienna, Cardinal since 1998.
