b. Graz (Styria), Oct. 7, 1931, economist and politician (Austrian 
People's Party OeVP). Initially in banking (Creditanstalt-Bankverein), 
1965-1973 chief city councillor and member of the Vienna provincial 
government, 1973-1982 member of the Vienna Landtag and member of the 
Vienna municipal council; member of the managing board of 
Kommunalkredit AG, 1982-1989 member of the managing board of OeMV AG. 
1990-1995 president of the Austrian  Nationalbank. Since 2000 special 
representative of the Austrian federal government for restitution to 
former slaves and forced labourers under the National Socialist 
regime.
