!!!Schesatobel

Schesatobel, Vorarlberg, largest landslide cone in the Eastern Alps
caused by clear cutting in the Buers Aussenfeld area near Bludenz.
Within a time span of 100 years (starting in approximately 1800)
around 40 million m%%sup 3/% moraine material was deposited
at the bottom of the Ill valley or in the River Ill forming a large
debris cone (80 hectares). Building on the Schesatobel cone and
planting on the slopes began in 1899, and a 1,300 m dam was built
in Buers; additional civil engineering work is still necessary in
parts of the area. Confidence in the effectiveness of the protection
measures gave rise to intense building activity in the eastern part of
the alluvial cone in the 1960s.
