b. Bruck an der Mur (Styria), May 4, 1896, 
d. Vienna, Oct. 22, 1983, physicist. From 1932 university professor in 
Freiburg (Switzerland), from 1951 in Vienna; important achievements in 
the field of experimental physics. 1960 Erwin Schroedinger Prize of 
the Austrian Academy of Sciences, 1963-1969 and 1970-1973 President of 
the Austrian  Academy of Sciences.
