b. Vienna, Aug. 7, 1938 physicist. Studied at the University of 
Vienna, participated in the development of the Ludwig Boltzmann 
Institute of Solid State Physics from 1962; 1966-1971 Research Fellow 
at the Physics Department of the University of York, 1971-1975 
Research Associate at the Physics Department of the University of 
California in Berkeley, which had a decisive influence on his further 
career. Returned to Vienna in 1975, from 1986 Full Professor.at the 
Department of General Electrical Engineering and Electronics, 
currently at the Department of Photonics of Vienna University of 
Technology. Focuses on non-linear optics, ultra-short light pulses and 
the interaction between solids and high-intensity light.
