b. Frankfurt am Main (Germany), Feb. 5, 1929, journalist, poet, art 
critic. Came to Vienna in 1939, studied law and art history. Until 
1973 director of the art association Kestner Gesellschaft Hannover, 
until 1975 head curator of the National Gallery of Berlin. 1978-1986 
director of the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (German 
Academic Exchange Service, DAAD), 1986-1994 professor of art history 
at the Akademie der bildenden Kuenste (Academy of Fine Arts ) in 
Munich, since 1995 president of the association Bayerische Akademie 
der Schoenen Kuenste (Bavarian Academy of the Fine Arts). 1980-1999 
president of the International Summer Academy in Salzburg. Author of 
poems and essays on art in the 19th and 20th century. Awarded the 
Austrian State Prize for Cultural Journalism in 1992.
