Schnitzler, Heinrich (Henry), b. Hinterbruehl (Lower Austria), Aug. 9, 1902,
d. Vienna, July 12, 1982. Actor, director, son of Arthur Schnitzler,
grandson of Johann Schnitzler, father of Michael Schnitzler. After
acting lessons with F. Herterich 1921 debut at the Wiener
Raimundtheater, 1923-1932 in Berlin, 1932-1938 at the Deutsches
Volkstheater in Vienna, where he also worked as a director and
dramaturge. 1938 emigration to the USA, where he directed and taught
drama, directing and theatre history from 1942 to 1956; 1957 return to
Austria, directed plays at the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna
(about 60 productions), from 1959 its deputy manager; 1963 awarded the
Kainz Medal; guest director at numerous European theatres;
administered his father's literary estate (new edition of the
"Collected Works" in 4 vols., correspondence with H. von
Hofmannsthal and R. M. Rilke).
