Schrattenthal, Lower Austria, town in the district of Hollabrunn, alt. 
289 m, pop. 940, area 22.43 km%%sup 2/%, agricultural 
community at the north-west border of the Weinviertel region, south of 
Retz. Wine-growing, trade. - Documented mention 1220 as 
"Schratental", regularly laid out in the 15%%sup th/%  
century, granted town status in 1472. - Remains of late-Gothic 
fortification (wall, 2 defense towers, Eggenburger Tor gateway); 
castle (formerly town fortification) with late-Gothic fortified chapel 
(1436-1438) and parapet walk; gatehouse with so-called 
"Schafstall" building and prison tower (15%%sup th/%  
century); main castle building (late-Gothic core) with Baroque 
alterations (formerly moated castle, alterations until 1719); 
late-Gothic parish church (15%%sup th/%  century) with baptismal font 
of red marble (15%%sup th/%  century) and gravestones decorated with 
the coat of arms of the Eyczing family (15%%sup th/%  - 16%%sup th/%  
centuries); pillory (1542) and column dedicated to the Virgin Mary 
(1680).
