!!!Schrebergärten

Allotment Gardens, small gardens rented for cultivation and
recreation. Usually located in the outskirts of a city and under the
responsibility of allotment garden societies. In Germany and Austria
known as "Schrebergaerten" after the German physician and
educationalist D. G. Schreber (1808-1861), Introduced in Austria
by F. Dinghofer (mayor of Linz) in 1909. During the two World Wars
they were important for providing food for the local population, today
mainly used for leisure and recreation purposes. Since most of them
are located on the outskirts, allotment gardens can sometimes cause
problems for the expansion and development of cities, but today their
function as green belts is becoming increasingly appreciated. In
Vienna the construction of permanent residences is generally not
allowed, but since 1993 exceptions may be made under certain
circumstances.
