690 m, pop. 3,843, area 18.05 km%%sup 2/%, bi-seasonal
tourism (456,575 overnight stays in 1992), located in the Montafon
Valley, climatic health resort at the confluence of the rivers Litz
and Ill, opposite Tschagguns; overlooked by the Kreuzjoch, Hochjoch
and Mittagsjoch passes. - District court, Chamber of Labour, nursing
home, Maria Rast Hospital, school of rural domestic science, sheltered
workshop (Caritas), spa hotel, Montafon museum of local history and
culture, skating rink, central administrative offices and electric
power station of the Montafonerbahn AG, waterworks; Montafoner
Hochjochbahn 1 and 2 mountain railways; wood-working industry,
manufacture of wax candles, electronics business. - First documented
mention 1209, became part of Austria in 1420; neo-Romanesque parish
church (1865/66) with frescoes (1873/74 and 1905-1907), glass painting
(1995); Capuchin monastery in Gauenstein with church (building from
1847), Litz chapel with fresco from 1688; court building (18%%sup th/%
century, from 1775 seat of the local court of justice). Customs:
"Witch burning" on the first Sunday in Lent.
