b. Vienna, March 4, 1923. Philologist (Judaic studies). 1966-1993 
University professor, founded the first Institute of Judaic studies at 
the University of Vienna in the same year and the Austrian Jewish 
Museum at Eisenstadt in 1972. Research into Jewish history and culture 
from biblical times until the present. S. has played an important role 
in furthering the dialogue between Christians and Jews.
