b. Munich (Germany), Jan. 15, 1904, 
d. Grossgmain (Salzburg), Oct. 22, 1984. (Theatre) director. Worked 
mainly in Germany, from 1968 guest director at the Salzburg Festival; 
with C.  Neher, J.  Krips and Karl  Boehm he founded the legendary 
"Mozart style" (concentration on the stage characters, sparse use 
of props); developed a special "Salzburg dramaturgy" for the 
Salzburg Festival, directed his "Salzburger Strassentheater" and 
the annual "Fest in Hellbrunn" (Celebration at Hellbrunn Palace). 
Mozart Medal in 1964.
