School Medical Service: The first instructions pertaining to hygiene
in schools were included in school legislation of the early modern
age, particularly in the 18%%sup th/% century. The 1873 decree on
health care in schools led to the development of a scientific view of
school hygiene (L. Burgerstein) and to the first instances of medical
service in schools. In 1909 a provisional school medical service was
introduced at some teacher training institutions; a legal regulation
for federal secondary schools (amended in 1948 and 1960) was
introduced in 1923, for primary schools and the lower levels of
secondary schools in1955.
