Sohn von [Thomas Schwanthaler|AEIOU/Schwanthaler,_Thomas], Bruder von [Franz Matthias Schwanthaler|AEIOU/Schwanthaler,_Franz_Matthias], Vater von [Johann Peter Schwanthaler|AEIOU/Schwanthaler,_Johann_Peter_der_Ältere] dem Älteren. Künstlerisch stark beeinflusst von seinem Vater, dessen Werkstatt in Ried er 1710 übernahm.
