Schwechat, Lower Austria, town in the district of Wien-Umgebung, alt. 
163 m, pop. 14,669, area 44.74 km%%sup 2/%, on the River 
Schwechat, southeast of Vienna; has close economic ties with the 
capital. - Local branch of the Wien-Umgebung district commission, 
district court, employment services, chamber of labour, economic 
chamber, district chamber of agriculture, regional health and social 
insurance agency (cash office), legal training school, Bundesgymnasium 
and Bundesrealgymnasium secondary schools, adult education centre, 
Schwechat cultural centre, Nestroy plays and other events at 
Rothmuehle Palace, sports complex, Koernerhalle multi-purpose hall, 
road maintenance department; Vienna Airport 5 km east of Schwechat 
with Air Traffic Control Service of the Federal Office of Civil 
Aviation and customs office; 16,674 people employed (1991), most of 
whom in the sectors transport, ( Airports, forwarding agencies, 
freight transport), processing trade and industry: OMV oil refinery 
(8.8 million tonnes refined in 1993, including the production of 
semi-finished goods), food industry (brewery, established in 1632, 
mill), chemical industry (welding gases) and plastics, iron and steel 
processing industry (cable producers, ski bindings, steel 
construction). Declared a town in 1922. - "Ala Nova" Roman 
castle mentioned in the  Itinerarium Antonini and  Notitia Dignitatum, 
Roman coin finds at Altkettenhof and Mannswoerth (today in the Lower 
Austrian Provincial Museum); parish church with Romanesque core, 
altered in Baroque style by J. N. Ehbruster in 1764, severely 
damaged by bombs in 1945, Rococo interior and altarpiece by M. J. 
Schmidt; filial church, built as a Capuchin church at the end of the 
17%%sup th/%  century; "Rothmuehle" and 
"Thurnmuehle" Palaces, both from the 18%%sup th/%  century, 
as well as "Neumuehle" Palace; cross-shaped plague monument 
(1669). In Rannersdorf, (cadastral district) Wallhof Palace, manorial 
estate from 1662, Baroque chapel (around 1700) and hunting lodge 
(middle of the 18%%sup th/%  century).
