Lakes: Almost all Austrian lakes are glacial lakes which were formed
by glacial erosion of glaciers of the Ice Age and the damming of
melting waters through moraines and other erosion deposits; Lake
Constance was formed by the Rhine Glacier, the lakes of the
Salzkammergut District (more than 40 lakes) by the Traun Glacier.
Other lake districts can be found in Carinthia and in the Flachgau
region belonging to the province of Salzburg. Many of the lakes
existing today consist of what remained of much larger glacial lakes.
Lake Neusiedl is a steppe lake, which was also formed in the Ice Age
through the eroding and depositing activities of the forerunners of
present-day rivers.
