b. Aken (Germany), Dec. 18, 1826, 
d. Meran/Merano (South Tyrol), April 21, 1908. Historian. From 
1857 university professor in Vienna, was head of the Institute of 
Austrian History Research  Institut fuer Oesterreichische 
Geschichtsforschung in 1869-1991, which specialised in various 
ancillary branches of historical research, especially documentary 
studies under his direction. In 1881 he founded the Oesterreichisches 
Historisches Institut (Austrian Historical Institute) in Rome, which 
he directed until 1901. Founder and editor of the "Mttlg. d. 
Inst. f. Oe. Geschichtsforschung" (MIOeG, from 1880).
