Siegendorf, Burgenland, municipality in the district of
Eisenstadt-Umgebung, alt. 176 m, pop. 2,446, area
23.06 km%%sup 2/%, in the Wulka Plain, near the border with
Hungary; approximately 56 % of the population (1,370 persons)
belong to the ethnic minority of Croats. - Since the closure of the
sugar factory in 1989, economic restructuring has led to the emergence
of a large number of small and medium-sized enterprises; industrial
zone with trade and manufacturing companies in the eastern part of the
municipality; manufacture of electric household appliances,
pre-fabricated building systems. - Baroque parish church (1659),
statue of the Virgin Mary; column of the Holy Trinity (early
18%%sup th/% century); castrum ("monastic cellar") dating
from the 16%%sup th/% century. Four tumuli dating from the urn field
culture of the late Bronze Age in the Schuschenwald forest (one of
which has been reconstructed).
