Simony, Friedrich, b. Hrochuv Tynec, Czech Republic (then 
Hrochowteinitz),  Nov. 30, 1813, d. St. Gallen 
(Styria), July 20, 1896, geographer and explorer of the Alps, father 
of Oskar  Simony. 1851-1885 university professor in Vienna; introduced 
geography as university course, explored the Dachstein mountains and 
the Eastern Alps, climbed the Dachstein summit for the first time 
during winter in 1847. Was a friend of A.  Stifter (portrayed as the 
scientist in the story ´Nachsommer´). An alpine refuge at 
7234 ft and the notch between the glaciers ´Grosser 
Gosaugletscher´ and ´Hallstaetter Gletscher´ in the 
Dachstein Mountains are named after him.
