b. Berlin (Germany), April 25, 1941, physicist. Studied technical 
physics in Vienna, then set up an electron microscope laboratory and a 
working group for solid-state physics. 1974 professor at the 
University of Technology in Vienna, since 1991 its rector. 1995-1999 
president of the Austrian Conference of Rectors. Awarded the F. 
Kohlrausch Prize in 1972.
