Soya Bean, soybean (Glycine max), annual legume rich in oil and 
proteins, originally from Manchuria, first introduced in Austria on 
the occasion of the 1873 World Exhibition and used by G.  Haberlandt 
for plant breeding for the first time in Europe. Was cultivated until 
approx. 1947 and again, on extensive acreage, from 1988 onwards. 
Cultivated area in 1993: 54,000 hectares, average yield 
2.3 tons/hectare, total production 125,000 tons.
