Spann, Othmar, b. Altmannsdorf near Vienna, Oct. 1, 1878, 
d. Neustift near Guessing (Burgenland), July 8, 1950, economist, 
sociologist, historical philosopher. 1919 professor at the University 
of Vienna, fierce opponent of Marxism. Supporter of an idealistic 
sociology based on the principles of universality (in terms of economy 
and sociology, the individual is only to be considered as one part of 
the whole community-theory of the "true state"); called for a 
reorganization of state and society on the basis of corporations ( 
Corporate State.
