!!!Speckbacher, Josef

Speckbacher, Josef, b. Gnadenwald (Tirol), July 13, 1767, 
d. Hall in Tirol, March 28, 1820, Tirolean freedom fighter, also 
known as "Mann von Rinn" (man from Rinn) after the name of his 
wife´s farm house. Fought against the French 1797, 1800 and 
1805; 1809 at the side of A.  Hofer actively participated in 3 battles 
at the ´Bergisel´ hill. Was known as excellent tactician 
in mountain warfare; together with J.  Haspinger and P.  Mayr beat the 
division of the Rhine League at the pass of Mittenwald-Oberau (also 
known as ´Sachsenklemme´). On Oct. 17, 1809 defeated near 
Unken and Mellek, fled to Vienna, where he remained until 1814. Tomb 
in the ´Hofkirche´ church in Innsbruck.
