Spitz, Rene, b. Vienna, Jan. 29, 1887, d. Denver (USA), 
Sept. 14, 1974, psychoanalyst. S. Ferenczi introduced him to S.  
Freud, in whose practice he underwent a teaching analysis 1910/11. S. 
practised in Vienna and Berlin, went to Paris in 1932, to New York in 
1938, where he taught as psychoanalyst at the New York Psychoanalytic 
Institute for 17 years. In 1956 became guest lecturer at the 
University of Colorado. He explored the earliest stages of ego 
development and specified methods of scientific observation of 
newborns and infants.
