St. Gallen, Styria, market town in the district of Liezen, 
alt. 515 m, pop. 1,609, 
area 61.01 km%%sup 2/%, in the Ennstal Alps, near the border 
with Lower Austria. - Administration of the Styrian provincial 
forests, social counselling; production of drilling machines and 
beverages, plastics industry, some tourism; Formerly residence of 
family of medieval ironworks owners. - Late Gothic parish church 
(1515-1523), extended between 1736 and 1740 in Baroque style, marble 
high altar (1782); altar-piece panel by M. J. Schmidt and 
paintings by B. Altomonte; old patrician mansions (originally owned by 
the wealthy associates of mining companies); ruin of Gallenstein 
castle (1278); Gothic niche way-side shrine (1488).
