St. Peter in der Au, Lower Austria, market town in the district of 
Amstetten, alt. 350 m, pop. 4491, area 59.88 km%%sup 2/%, 
situated on the upper part of the River Url not far from the Upper 
Austrian border. - District court and district chapter of the Chamber 
of Agriculture, offices of the district agency for youth services and 
Lower Austrian district farming authority, congregation of the School 
Sisters of the Third Order; metal processing. - Impressive late Gothic 
fortified church with choir (14%%sup th/%  century) and hall with 
reticulate ribbed vaults (latter half of the 15%%sup th/%  century), 
altar painting by M. J. Schmidt (late 18%%sup th/%  century), art 
nouveau high altar. (1912/1913); former moated castle (first 
documented mention in 1277, 16%%sup th/%  century), Renaissance 
construction with an arcaded courtyard and keep.
