Stadttheater, Wiener, 1%%sup st/%  district of Vienna; in 1870 M.  
Friedlaender and H.  Laube planned a theatre for classical plays, 
modern tragedies and comedies as a middle-class counterpart of the 
k. k. Hofburgtheater (Imperial Palace Theatre); the Wiener 
Stadttheater was built according to plans by Ferdinand  Fellner in 
1871/72 and opened in 1872; it was gutted by fire in 1884 and was 
redesigned as a variety theatre (a combination of theatre, ball room, 
hotel, restaurant and coffeehouse) by the architects Fellner and H.  
Helmer and called "Etablissement  Ronacher" in 1887/88.
