!!!Stahlbeton

Concrete, Reinforced, quickly became popular as
"ferroconcrete" in Austria for constructing bridges,
industrial, office and representative buildings from the turn of the
century (in Vienna: Zacherl House by J. Plečnik, 1904; Gerngross
department store 1904; granary on Handelskai quay, 1911/13); even
architects of the Jugendstil period, such as O. Wagner
(Postsparkasse=Postal Savings Bank, Kirche Am Steinhof=Steinhof
Hospital Church), Josef Hoffmann (Purkersdorf Sanatorium) and A.
Loos (House on Michaelerplatz square) used reinforced concrete. In the
course of the 20%%sup th/% century steel construction has gained more
and more ground, especially in civil engineering, while a variety of
building materials continues to be used for structural engineering.
