Stammel, Joseph Thaddaeus, baptized Graz (Styria), Nov. 9, 1695, 
d. Monastery of Admont (Styria), Dec. 21, 1765, sculptor. Main 
representative of Austrian wood sculpture in the late Baroque; from 
1718 stay in Rome, from 1726 sculptor at the Monastery of Admont. His 
preference for abundant forms and movements reflects his commitment to 
the late Gothic tradition. A master of detail, he was at the peak of 
his creative powers when he furbished the library of the Admont 
Monastery.

Styria: high altar of St. Martin in Graz, 1738/1740; crib in 
Kalwang, 1751; ´The Four Last Things´ ("Die vier letzten 
Dinge"): Death, Judgement, Heaven and Hell (Tod, Gericht, Himmel und 
Hoelle) in the library of the Admont Monastery, 1760. - Wood-carvings 
in Admont (Reliefs: Rosenkranzgeheimnisse, Leichnam Christi, 
Vesperbild, Die 4 Jahreszeiten), Frauenberg (altar in front of the 
rood screen), Gaishorn, Mautern, St. Gallen, Wildalpen, Strechau 
(rood), Oeblarn.
