Stans, Tirol, municipality in the district of Schwaz, alt. 563 m, 
pop. 1,703, area 20.07 km%%sup 2/%, summer tourist destination 
(69,178 overnight stays) in the Inn Valley, north of Schwaz, at the 
foot of Stanser Joch mountain (alt. 2,102 m). - Georgenberg 
pilgrimage and meditation centre; tinsel factory (since 1802, 
producing decoration for Christmas trees), jam factory, construction 
of vehicles (buses, snow smoothers). - Documented mention in 827; 
late-Gothic Old Parish Church; neo-Gothic New Parish Church 
(1884-1895); Baroque pilgrimage chapel of Maria Tax (1667) with 
frescoes dedicated to the Virgin Mary (1757) by C. A. Mayr; 
pilgrimage church in Sankt Georgenberg (documented mention around 
1000, Baroque reconstruction 1654-1660); former Benedictine monastery 
(from 1138, transferred to Fiecht after a fire in 1705, two wings 
preserved);  Tratzberg Palace; close to Stans, Wolfsklamm gorge and 
Gamsgartenklamm gorge. Advent custom of "Ankloepfeln" every ten years 
("Ankloepfeln" literally "to knock on people's doors", people go 
around knocking at doors, reciting verses, giving good wishes and 
asking for donations for charity) .
