!!!Starhemberg, Hochadelsgeschlecht

Starhemberg: aristocratic dynasty from Upper Austria. Gundackar von
Stainpach from the S. castle at Hausruck acquired Schaunburg and
Eferding in 1559; the family received the title of imperial counts in
1643 and that of imperial princes in 1765. The family palace at
Minoritenplatz in Vienna was built under Count Conrad Balthasar
Starhemberg (example of early baroque architecture; since 1871 has
housed the Ministry of Education); the palace in the fourth district
of Vienna (Rainergasse 11) was commissioned by Count Gundackar Thomas
Starhemberg before 1706 (later became Schoenburg-Hartenstein Palace).
From 1642, the S. family owned a tenement house on the Wieden, which
housed over 1,000 tenants and was the largest in Vienna. The
Freihaustheater was also part of the building. Other prominent members
of the S. family were: Field Marshal Count Ernst Ruediger
Starhemberg, Heimwehr (paramilitary force) leader Ernst Ruediger
Starhemberg, Count Guido Starhemberg and Baron Helmhard von
Starhemberg.
