Central Statistical Office, Austrian, "Statistik Austria" (STAT), office entrusted with 
compiling federal  statistics. Founded as the "Statistical Bureau" at 
the general directorate of accounts in 1829, became the directorate of 
administrative statistics in 1840, the imperial statistical central 
commission in 1863, federal office for statistics from 1921-1938, 
present name, Oesterreichisches Statistisches Zentralamt from 
1945-1999, spun off from the federal authorities in 2000 and turned 
into  Statistik Oesterreich, an independent federal institution under 
public law.
