!!!Strafvollzugsanstalten

Penal Institutions, institutions in which offenders serve prison
sentences. Special institutions are provided for juveniles, mentally
deranged persons, tuberculosis sufferers, persons convicted for
negligence, etc. Female and male prisoners are separated. Austria
currently (1996) has the following penal institutions: one in each
provincial capital, in Garsten, Gerasdorf (juveniles), Goellersdorf
(mentally deranged offenders), Hirtenberg, Korneuburg, Leoben, Ried,
Schwarzau am Steinfeld (women), Sonnberg, Stein, Steyr, Suben and

Strafvollzugsgesetz act of 1969, which has since undergone several
amendments. As per October 31, 1996 1,536 persons in custody pending
trial and 4,874 prisoners were detained in Austrian penal
institutions. At the same time 3,540 persons were employed in penal
institutions, including administrative officers.
