!!!Strauß, Eduard

Strauss, Eduard, b. Vienna, March 15, 1835, d. Vienna, Dec.
28, 1916, composer, musical director. Youngest son of Johann Strauss
the Elder; first directed his own band; after the death of his brother
Josef Strauss, directed the "Strausssche Kapelle" with his brother
Johann Strauss the Younger until the members of the orchestra
appointed C. M. Ziehrer their new director 1878. 1872 was
appointed Director of the Imperial Court Balls (title first introduced
as an award for his father). Went on extensive tours with his own
orchestra, repeating his father´s success. 1901 dissolved the
orchestra and retreated into private life. Embittered by the fact that
he was much less successful as a composer than his brothers and his
father, he destroyed their archives of hand-written music.
