Strauss, Josef, b. Vienna, Aug. 22, 1827, d. Vienna, July 
22, 1870, composer, originally architect and inventor; son of Johann  
Strauss the Elder, from 1862 directed the Strauss Orchestra together 
with his brother Johann  Strauss the Younger; pursued a more poetic 
style of composition influenced by Franz  Schubert, H. Berlioz and F. 
Chopin.
