Strudengau Valley, Lower Austria, narrow meandering valley of the 
River  Danube from Ardagger Markt to Ybbs an der Donau; is 
followed by the Nibelungengau in the east. Up to Sarmingstein the 
northern bank of the Danube lies on Upper Austrian territory and forms 
part of the Bohemian Massif. The southern bank lies on Lower Austrian 
territory and is formed by the plateau of Neustadtl an der Donau, 
also part of the Bohemian Massif, and Hengstberg hill (571 m). 
The Strudengau valley used to be one of the most dangerous sections of 
the Danube for navigation, and it was only the construction of the 
reservoir of the Ybbs-Persenbeug power station (1957) that solved the 
problem. Villages: Grein (alt. 239 m), Struden (alt. 232 m), 
Hirschenau (alt. 239 m) and Persenbeug (alt. 222 m).
