Stubai Alps, Tirol, highly glaciated massif of the Central Alps
between the Inntal, Wipptal and Oetztal valleys, with the Zuckerhuetl
(3,507 m) and Schrankogel (3,497 m) mountains. Numerous
valleys ( Stubai Valley, Gschnitz Valley, Oberbergtal valley,
Sellrain Valley) divide the Stubai Alps into mountain ranges
(Alpeinergruppe, Hochstubai, Kalkkoegel Mountains). The Stubai Alps
consist mainly of old crystalline slates; only the Kalkkoegel
Mountains and the Serles mountain (2,718 m) contain younger
Mesozoic limestone; the Blaser mountain (2,241 m) and the
Kesselspitze mountain (2,728 m) contain remains of the Northern
Limestone Alps that originally covered them. Mountain refuges: Bremer
Huette (alt. 2,411 m), Winnebachseehuette (alt. 2,361 m),
Pforzheimer Huette (Witzenmannhaus, alt. 2,310 m), Dresdner
Huette (alt. 2,308 m), Nuernberger Huette (alt. 2,278 m).
Mountain railways around Kuehtai, Axamer Lizum, Fulpmes, Unterbergtal
(glacial skiing area). Sellrain-Silz power stations (operated by the
TIWAG Tyrolean power services) in the north-western part of the Stubai
Alps (1981). The Stubai valley railway runs from Innsbruck to Fulpmes
(since 1904).
