Halls of Residence, Students': Austria has a total of 159 
students´ halls of residence (1994), offering 19,352 places 
(i.e. for approx. a quarter of all students). The largest bodies 
responsible for halls of residence are the 
Studentenfoerderungsstiftung foundation (2,799 places, founded in 1958 
by the Austrian National Union of Students), the Akademikerhilfe 
association (2,739 places, founded 1921) and the Wirtschaftshilfe fuer 
Arbeiterstudenten association (Wihast, total of 1,754 places, founded 
in 1923), which is also responsible for the Adolf-Schaerf 
students´ halls of residence. Most students´ halls of 
residence are used as hotels during the summer holidays.
