Student Grants, until 1963 student grants only existed in the form of 
private grants awarded by foundations, regional authorities, bodies 
under public law representing particular interests and private 
organisations, has since been expanded by the state. Scholarships, 
travel allowances (for students over the age of 27), grants, financial 
assistance for studies abroad and research grants are open to 
successful and needy students. Like performance grants, where 
neediness is no criterion, research grants may be awarded solely on 
the grounds of excellent academic performance. All students are 
eligible for free travel ( School Children, Free Travel for) and are 
insured against accidents.
