b. Beczkó (now Beckov, Slovakia), April 5, 1827, 
d. Vienna, Oct. 9, 1893, paleontologist and geologist. From 1849 at 
the ''Geologische Reichsanstalt'' in Vienna, from 1877 its Deputy 
Director, from 1885 to 1992 its Director. Numerous studies on the 
geology of the Alps and Carpathians and paleobotanical monographs, 
especially on fossil plants of the Paleozoic in Bohemia. Initiated the 
printing of the Geological Special Map of the Austro-Hungarian 
Monarchy to the scale of 1 : 75.000.
