Superintendent, term used since the Edict of Tolerance for the holder 
of a leading religious office in a Protestant church in Austria. Since 
the introduction of the office of bishop and the reduction in size of 
the "dioceses" the superintendent has been exercising the 
functions of a bishop and of middle management.
