b. Budapest (Hungary), Sept. 16, 1899, 
d. Salzburg, Sept. 10, 1975, conductor and musical director. 1937-1940 
conductor at the opera of Zurich "Opernhaus Zuerich"; 1940-1944 
dramaturge at the Salzburg Festival; 1945-1947 chief conductor of the 
Vienna Symphonic Orchestra; 1947-1950 director of the opera in Graz, 
1957-1959 in Glasgow. From 1946 taught at the Musikhochschule (now 
University of Music and Performing Arts) in Vienna; numerous 
publications on music interpretation. Awarded the Austrian Decoration 
for Science and Art in 1975.
