Tassilo Chalice, most important and oldest preserved Communion chalice 
from the early Middle Ages in the Bavarian-Austrian area, given to the 
monastery of Kremsmuenster (Upper Austria) by the Bavarian duke  
Tassilo III and his wife Liutpirc; the chalice is made of 
gold-plated copper, silver and niello, and covered with figurative and 
ornamental motifs, which may indicate that the Tassilo Chalice 
(probably made in 777) was crafted by an artist possibly residing in 
the Salzburg area; 5 silver medallions depicting Christ and the 4 
Evangelists on the bowl, 4 additional medallions at the base.
