Taxenbach, province of Salzburg, market town in the district of Zell 
am See, alt. 779 m, pop. 2966, area 88.25 km%%sup 2/%, 
summer tourist resort (66,607 overnight stays) in central Salzachtal 
valley, situated at the entry into the Rauristal valley, in the lower 
Pinzgau region. - District court, contractors´ yard of the 
regional offices for torrent and avalanche control, agricultural 
vocational school; 2 power plants (privately owned); forestry, timber 
industry and trade. - First documentary mention in 963; deanery church 
(documented construction 1217, rebuilt in 1640 by S. Solari) with 
Gothic crypt, high altar (1685), Lady Chapel (1710); Gothic Eschenau 
parish church with wall paintings (14%%sup th/%  century); Edtburg and 
Taxenbach castle ruins;  Kitzlochklamm Gorge nearby.
