Technical Handicrafts (and Textile Handicrafts), since 1987 an 
alternative compulsory subject in primary schools, which may be taken 
up by male and female pupils; it replaced the former sex-specific 
subjects of handicrafts for boys (Handfertigkeitsunterricht) and 
needlework for girls (Weibliches Handarbeiten), which, mainly under 
the influence of the educational reform movement (Reformpaedagogik), 
had also become compulsory subjects in the lower forms of secondary 
schools.
