Technology: In the 20th century technological progress has been less 
due to individual  Inventions and Inventors, than to academic and 
industrial technology centres. Internationally competitive 
technological developments by Austrian firms have since 1945 mostly 
been active in the fields of automation, manufacturing and process 
engineering ( Emco Maier Ges. m. b. H., GFM at Steyr), 
control and communications engineering and electronics ( Philips 
Industrie GmbH,  Siemens AG Oesterreich,  Ericsson Austria AG,  
Alcatel Austria AG,  Elin), semiconductor technology and printed board 
manufacturing ( Austria Technologie & Systemtechnik AG), engine 
development ( AVL LIST GmbH in Graz,  BMW Motoren GmbH at Steyr) and 
environmental engineering ( BWT-AG). In the field of high-tech 
development, both hardware and software development at  Hagenberg im 
Muehlkreis, Upper Austria, also deserve mention. The  LD process and 
the Corex%%sup ®/% process developed by VOEST  VOEST, Vereinigte 
Oesterreichische Eisen- und Stahlwerke are innovative technologies 
applied in the steel industries.
