!!!Terzaghi, Karl

b. Prague (Czech Republic), Oct. 2, 1883, 
d. Winchester (USA), Oct. 25, 1963, engineer. After completing 
numerous studies (machine engineering, civil engineering, geology and 
others), carried out engineering and science projects in Croatia, 
Russia and Turkey. Established "soil mechanics" as a distinct 
scientific discipline, 1925-1929 and 1936 Professor in the USA where 
he achieved tremendous success with his methods for laying foundations 
for large buildings, but only after initial controversy. From 
1929-1938 at the University of Technology in Vienna, which during this 
time became an international research centre for soil mechanics. In 
1939 emigrated to the USA and continued his work at Harvard University 
in Massachusetts. His publications are internationally renowned 
standard references.
